It is one year today since sixteen‑year‑old Vodafone Fiji Under 17 football player Muni Shalit Reddy drowned in Samoa and his family is still demanding answers as they claim that no compensation has been paid.
Reddy’s father, Muni Mahendra Reddy says they were told by the Fiji Football Association that the players were not insured.
He says they received $3,000 from the Fiji FA for funeral expenses.
Reddy says his lawyer is now handling the matter.
He is urging the Fiji FA to insure the players as there is a risk they can get injured while playing for their country.
When contacted, Fiji FA’s CEO Bob Kumar highlighted that their lawyer is talking with Reddy’s lawyer on the issue.
When asked on the player insurance issue, Kumar confirms that they have started doing travel insurance for all the players who will be representing Fiji soccer abroad.
Kumar has not revealed why Fiji FA was not insuring its players before Muni Reddy’s death.
Reddy passed away in Apia after he had gone out swimming with some of his teammates.
