An initiative to turn everyday rubbish into electricity and other resources was put forward today by the Zhongze Oasis Company from China and Fiji's Ambassador to China Sir James Ah Koy.
The initiative which is still in its planning stages will see the setting up of a $35 million waste conversion plant in two centres around the country.
Ah Koy said a proposal has been put forward to the twelve municipal councils to enter into a joint venture so that the problem of rubbish collection and disposal will be a thing of the past for the various councils.
Ah Koy said the outcome of the project will be a cleaner Fiji which in the long run will benefit other industries like tourism.
Some of the finished products of the waste conversion plant will be metal, glass, paper, wood and building bricks.
