Final figures released by the Bureau of Statistics reveals that there were record visitor arrivals in the country last year.

Statistics show that 539,881 visitors arrived in the country with visitors from Australia recording the highest number at 207,001 representing 38.3 percent of the total visitors. New Zealand followed with 99,774, United States 64,687 and United Kingdom 34,785.

The month of July recorded the highest number of visitors with 55,924 visitors.

According to the Bureau the rapid increase could have been due to recovery campaigns launched in Australia and New Zealand by the Fiji Visitors Bureau and the Tourism Action Group which involved heavy discounts by airlines and hoteliers.

Another factor which contributed to the increase in visitor arrivals was the extra 2 million dollars injection of funds by the government. The Fiji Visitors Bureau had also diverted all its funds last year for tactical marketing in the key source markets of Australia and New Zealand.
