A recent study has shown that inequality in Fiji has dropped and Fiji is one of 5 countries in the Asia-Pacific Region to have achieved this.

This was revealed by the Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum while speaking at the opening of a 2 day training workshop on Reporting on Human Rights in Novotel, Lami today.

He adds that this is very positive for Fiji to have reduced inequality and stresses that there is still a lot more work to be done.

Sayed-Khaiyum challenged the participants to use the workshop to better their understanding of Human Rights and questioned them about how well they understand the human rights discourse.

Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted that when talking about Human Rights one is essentially talking about Civil and Political Rights.

He adds that the 2013 Constitution and the Bill of Rights now has socio‑economic rights, which had been absent from the equation before.

The Attorney General stressed that there is not enough maturity displayed by journalists or commentators of Human Rights about the depth of human rights and how it works.

He adds that another issue that needs to be understood fully is indigenous rights.

Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has urged journalists and participants at the workshop not to report simply on something someone said but to fully understand all aspects of the issue.

Around 25 journalists from different media groups will be part of the 2 day workshop that concludes tomorrow.
