Ousted Speaker of the House of Representatives Pita Nacuva has today come out publically and said that he is still the legally appointed speaker and is calling on President Ratu Josefa Iloilo to recall parliament.
Nacuva said he has requested for an audience with President Iloilo for some time and it is now time for him to publically say that the only thing right under the constitution is to recall parliament.
Nacuva also stresses that parliament still exists as the president did not dissolve parliament in December 2006.
And as the draft People's Charter is about to be made public, Nacuva said any constitutional and electoral changes need parliamentary approval.
He stresses that there is no other way.
Nacuva said he has also written to the interim Prime Minister Commodore Bainimarama seeking an audience with him. However he has received no reply.
Meanwhile, Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry said Nacuva should just wait for the High Court ruling to determine the legality or otherwise of the interim government and its actions.
However SDL National Director Peceli Kinivuwai said they strongly support the call by Pita Nacuva.
And the interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has said Pita Nacuva should go back and look at the promulgations put in place by the President Ratu Josefa Iloilo at the beginning of the year.
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said Nacuva should know better because the matter is before the courts.
