The governor of American Samoa Togiola Tulafono has ordered an end to most search and rescue operations and is switching operations to rebuilding after the devastating tsunami four days ago.

Tulaono said the situation in American Samoa is stabilizing and that the bulk of search and rescue operations have been completed.

The combined death toll is at 165 with 125 people confirmed dead in Samoa, 31 in American Samoa and 9 in Tonga.

Authorities in Samoa are warning there could be a major disease outbreak if fresh water and food is not distributed quickly to survivors.

Meanwhile, Assistant District Governor for Rotary Fiji Bob Niranjan said they have been sending relief to Samoa and would appreciate help.
