After witnessing the devastation caused by one of the worst floods to hit the Western Division, the Commissioner Western is calling on authorities to relook at future development plans.
Joeli Rokovada said disaster risk management and disaster risk reduction directly relates to important issues of infrastructural development. He said sometimes development directly contributes to the vulnerability of communities at large.
The Western Division was worst hit during the recent floods with an estimated cost of damages to infrastructure at $7.4 million.
Meanwhile, there is a scheme under which the flood victims whose houses have been fully destroyed, are assisted.
These are the words of DISMAC Principal Officer, Patilia Dobui whose comment follows after Consumer Council of Fiji said that a strategy must be drawn by DISMAC and the government to assist flood victims with hardware materials.
