Re-known felon claims to be undercover Police Officer
32 year old Rokotunidau was in the high court today to mitigate in relation to eight major armed robberies dating back to 2003 which included the ANZ bank robbery in Samabula, ANZ bank in Centerpoint, home invasions, burglary and house break in.
His Laywer, Aseri Vakaloloma told High Court Judge Justice Daniel Gounder that Rokotunidau was recruited as a Police Constable in 2009 and went undercover to infiltrate syndicates.
He said the information he provided police helped avert a number of major robberies, gave information which led to several arrests and gave police other vital evidence.
Vakaloloma said Police had been using Rokotunidau as an informer since 2000 and he was formally recruited into the force in 2009 and still remains a police officer.
He said police accepted his trustworthiness however he was the target of resentment and animosity from other officers who had known of his past criminal history.
Vakaloloma, after briefly consulting Rokotunidau told the court that his client is ready to give evidence against some of the co-accused in the cases against him and that he can still assist the police to recover the missing weapons.
He said police used his client for his knowledge and then allegedly dumped him.
He also highlighted Prosecution documents which stated that Rokotunidau was an undercover police officer during a stint to uncover a major robbery plan.
Vakaloloma asked the court for mercy and leniency when considering the sentence.
Judge Justice Daniel Gounder questioned the DPP lawyer on whether there was any evidence to verify Rokotunidau's claims.
He said if the Prosecution does not rebut these claims than the court would have to accept it.
The DPP lawyer said it might be difficult to get the police to give evidence in the matter however the Judge stressed that they must establish whether Rokotunidau had infact assisted police in cases and to recover the missing weapons.
He instructed the DPP to ask Rokotunidau's Supervising Officer on whether these are true and if not Police will have to come to court and give evidence.
The case is adjourned till April 1st for sentencing.
