There is a ray of hope for people living in squatter settlements around the country as Municipal Councils have decided to try and develop proper, attractive and affordable housing sites.
The Council under the guidance of the Fiji Local Government Association will now undertake land subdivision and developments and Suva Lord Mayor Ratu Peni Volavola said they hope to secure donor agencies to help provide better standards of living of squatter dwellers.
Ratu Peni said there were several incidents were existing settlements could not be developed and regularized in the past due to factors such as locality of the sites, non-availability of the services and infrastructure, being low lying and higher water table and the size of the land on which the current settlements exist.
