Former Vice President Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi said it is impossible for a government that derives its power from the barrel of a gun to enforce cordial community relations.

While speaking at the Methodist Church of Fiji Think Tank meeting yesterday, Ratu Joni applauded the high ideals of the People's Charter of putting an end to racial discrimination and putting an end to the coup culture but said the way it is being done cannot improve community relations.

He adds there is little credibility when the Army Commander said that the Charter will put an end to racial discrimination when his own record of leadership of the military in the last ten years shows very little to support such assertion in terms of the membership of the military.

Ratu Joni who was the guest speaker at the Methodist Church Think Tank meeting spoke on the theme of good governance and leader’s responsibility in transparent and accountable leadership.

Meanwhile, the Roko Tui Bau is calling on the church leaders to uphold the dignity of all citizens of Fiji regardless of race, colour or religion and treat issues in the true Christian spirit and be peacemakers.

Ratu Joni expresses the view that instead of involving itself in the charter process, it would be best if the Methodist Church devotes to praying, fasting and asking for divine guidance and providence in the peaceful resolution of the many problems facing the country.

The second speaker, Adi Finau Tabakaucoro asserted that good governance is a function of constitutional rule, an independent judiciary, and the protection of individuals and freedom of the media.
