My ratepayers are now asking whether or not they should continue paying their rates.
These are the words of the Nasinu Mayor, Rajeshwar Kumar in light of the Interim Local Government Minister's decision to dissolve municipal councils on January 31st.
Kumar said he has explained everything to those ratepayers that have called and asked and adds in the end it is their prerogative.
In response to this, Director Local Government, Mosese Kama said only the Councillors' terms have been reduced to three years and therefore expires at January 31st, not the municipal council administration.
Kama adds ratepayers must continue to pay their rates in order to continue receiving services.
Interim Local Government Minister Filipe Bole said the Interim Government's decision to maintain the three-year term for councils was based on numerous serious complaints from members of the public against municipal councils.
