Questions Raised Over Charter
The questions point to the clear direction on what the Charter may contain after taking the views of the people.
These questions include; Do you think that existing constitutional arrangements, especially for communal voting rolls and the mandatory multi party system of government, may have aggravated communal and religious conflicts at the political level?
Other questions include; Do you think that political, ethnic and religious tensions, since 1987, have reduced the general level of trust between the main communities? and, Do you agree that the alternative voting system, combined with the communal boundary system tends to favour extremist parties (because moderate political parties do not give their first preference to other moderate parties that compete most closely with them for votes)?
The question on whether the current electoral system should be changed to make it fairer is also asked in the NCBBF consultation document which will be taken to the people.
Other issues include accountability, dealing with corruption, the role of the media, the effective application of human rights principles and factionalism in the indigenous Fijian community.
Head of the Public Relations Media team, Filimoni Kau explains the process of the working groups as they have less than four months to compile the People's Charter.
He hopes people in the provinces will willingly come and consult with them as some are against the idea of the People's Charter Process.
There are about 38 members in the NCBBF and about 200 people in the various working groups who will be distributing about 200,000 Consultation documents to the general public.
