The Quarantine Department is trying to identify loopholes in the Boarder Security Systems which allowed illegal importation of goods into the country.
Director Hiangi Foraete said a number of businesses allegedly illegally brought food items from China which has been referred to police for investigations.
Foraete said they are trying to establish how these items made it through the border control agencies and past Quarantine inspections, ending up on the shelves in supermarkets around the country.
He added after analysis at the Animal Health and Veterinary Department, they found that these confiscated items do not contain melamine chemical.
At least 50,000 Chinese babies are sick and four were killed after milk was tainted with the industrial chemical.
