A number of businesses are under investigation by the Quarantine Department for allegedly bringing in illegal food items from China.
Director Quarantine Hiangi Forete confirmed that they are trying to establish how these items made it through the border control agencies and past Quarantine inspections, ending up on the shelves in supermarkets around the country.
He said once they establish some facts in the case, further action will be taken.
The Department had confiscated a number of food items from these Chinese businesses which were detected during the crack down on products which are suspected to be contaminated and contains the harmful substance melamine.
These confiscated items have been sent to the Animal Health and Veterinary Department for analysis to confirm if it contains melamine and will be destroyed.
