The future of Flying Fijians and Gloucester flanker Akapusi Qera is in doubt after he was left out of the squad for the Heineken Cup match against Edinburgh at Murrayfield yesterday.

Qera is understood to have asked Gloucester to be released from the remainder of his contract, which expires at the end of the season with immediate effect, having fallen behind England prospect Matt Kvesic as first choice open side this season.

Qera has started just two matches in the Aviva Premiership with a further three appearances off the bench.

The Flying Fijians skipper reported back for training with Gloucester last week after leading Fiji on their recent European tour but he has not even made the bench against Edinburgh.

A club spokesperson said Qera has not walked out, he is still part of the squad but he is just not involved this weekend.

Qera joined Gloucester from Birmingham in 2007 and established himself as a firm favorite and he won Gloucester’s Player of the Year award in 2010.
