The Interim Attorney General said investigations into corruption allegations against the ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and others is still underway and it will be too early to lay charges without solid evidence.
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said Corruption cases go along with abuse of office and these white collar crimes have to be investigated thoroughly before laying charges as it is mainly based on documentary evidence which are destroyed too.
"Corruption is on the border with abuse of office so it will take time. It's better to charge someone when you know you'll be successful than prosecuting somebody for the sake of prosecuting."
He was reacting to questions from callers on a talkback show on our sister station Radio Sargam last week on why Laisenia Qarase and others have still not been charged for corruption whereas the main reason given for the 2006 coup was to eradicate corruption.
