Qarase alleges nepotism
Qarase said there are other qualified people to take up the position and the SDL party is concerned over Interim Public Service Minister, Poseci Bune's announcement.
Although Bune has made it clear that the FBCL board recommended Sayed-Khaiyum's name after the interviews, Qarase still maintains that someone else should have been appointed.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Public Enterprise has confirmed that there has not been any official appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer for Fiji Broadcasting Cooperation Limited.
Ministry Officials confirms that the Interim Prime Minister's Office has only endorsed Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum's name to take up the job and the FBCL Board has been directed by the Ministry to review the contract of the CEO.
Officials say once the contract is finalised, it will be given to Sayed-Khaiyum who will have to decide whether to take up the offer. They say if the contract is not acceptable they may have to find another suitable person to take up the job.
Permanent Secretary at the PM's office, Parmesh Chand said the appointment of the FBCL Chief Executive is done by the FBCL board and the name is only endorsed by the PM's office. Chand said the PM's office is not responsible to conduct interviews and make recommendations on who should take up the job.
We are currently trying to speak to the FBCL Chairman, Daniel Whippy. We will also speak to Sayed-Khaiyum who is currenly in New Zealand, later this afternoon.
