While ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has welcomed the decision, he said it may not be enough for the people and he said the local industry may also be affected after the duty scrapped for certain basic food items.

Qarase said he will make a full statement after analyzing the changes but he said it is good to see action been taken by the interim administration to provide relief to the low income earners.

But he said the increase in the income tax threshold would only benefit a few more thousand people and he questions how the others would be assisted.

Qarase also said the local industry which produces tinned fish and rice would also be affected following the scrapping of the duty on the imported basic food items.
