Ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has warned that the interim government should tread carefully when awarding tenders for the five projects through the $230 million soft loan from China.
Qarase said past experiences are a clear indication that by providing the loan, China will ensure their companies are awarded the tender for the projects which have always come back to haunt those in authority.
Fijivillage questioned Fiji's Ambassador to China Sir James Ah Koy who has set the soft loan for Fiji on past experiences such as the Kings Highway project where two Chinese companies failed to complete the work and the government had to continue to repay the loan.
Ah Koy said there were no such incidents during his time in government and stressed that there will have to be clauses in the tender which will ensure that the company given the contract is able to complete the project or pay back the money if they fail to do so.
