Fiji Teachers Union General Secretary said that punishing the students won't change anything.
Agni Deo Singh comments follows after a secondary school student was allegedly assaulted for talking to his girlfriend during class which landed him in hospital.
Singh said teachers must know the consequences for corporal punishment.
Meanwhile, secondary school teacher and priest are expected to appear in court today charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm.
The two allegedly assaulted the student after he was found talking to his girlfriend during classes. The student who sustained serious injuries and became unconscious was rushed to the hospital where he was admitted for a few days.
