The emergency activation of public transport in times of a disaster warning is something that needs to be closely looked into.
These are the sentiments of Defense Minister, Ratu Epeli Ganilau when asked whether there should be bus plans to help transport school children to their homes after a disaster warning is issued.
This is in light of the devastating earthquake and tsunami which hit Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga last week with Ganilau saying all stakeholders need to work together to help Fiji prepare for such a disaster.
Fijivillage News has established that a number of students did not have enough money to catch the bus since they only had the student fare when schools closed due to the tsunami warning last week.
This issue arose because the students are charged full fare if they catch any buses other than the school bus. In this case, there were no school buses as school was closed at about 9 o'clock in the morning.
The Fiji Bus Operators Association is expected to comment later.
