Public response positive - AG
These are the words of Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum however, he said Fiji Women's Crisis Centre Coordinator Shameema Ali's criticisms of the Domestic Violence Decree are politically motivated.
Sayed-Khaiyum said it should be noted that Ali was involved in the consultation process in 2004 which led to the finalization of this law.
These comments were made in response to criticisms by Ali that there was a lack of consultation before the Decree was made by the Bainimarama government in July this year.
In response, Ali said her comments are not politically motivated adding the Centre supports the Decree but it is just the wrong time to implement it.
According to the Government Gazette, the Domestic Violence Decree is to provide greater protection from domestic violence, to clarify the duties of the police regarding this, to introduce domestic violence restraining orders and other measures to promote the safety and well being of victims and to promote rehabilitation of perpetrators of domestic violence and for related matters.
Ali said there definitely needs to be more consultation with police officers before the implementation of this decree.
The FWCC is currently conducting a training workshop on the decree which was gazetted on August 14th.
