Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has told the delegates of the Kadavu Provincial Council that the province should be firm and expect the general elections to go ahead next year as promised by the government.

While opening the meeting at Suva's Studio 6, Commodore Bainimarama said the new constitution will benefit the people of Kadavu, their children and the generations to come.

He added that one of the most important points in the new constitution is the protection of itaukei, Rotuman and Banaban land.

The Prime Minister also highlighted some important aspects such as taking away racial discrimination and having equal rights.

He challenged the people to focus more on nation building.

After the opening, one of the delegates asked the Prime Minister why he has brought in people from other races to take up various leadership roles in the government.

Commodore Bainimarama stressed that he always wants the best person to take up the positions.

He said race does not matter as he needs people with the right skill sets to take up the positions for the benefit of people of the country.

He said he has the final say on the plans proposed by the ministers and if he thinks that someone is not fit for the job then he as the Prime Minister can remove them.

Other issues that were raised this morning from the delegates were expensive airfares, the bad condition of roads around the island and the need to improve mobile phone reception.

The Kadavu Provincial Council meeting is being chaired by former Magistrate, Aminiasi Katonivualiku.

It will end this Thursday.
