The Fiji Retailers Association believes that the proposed wage increase in the Wholesale/Retail Sector could increase the unemployment levels in the country.
Association President Himmat Lodhia said so far small and medium sized operators have managed to barely hang on despite the increased cost of doing business and the proposed wage increase could have drastic implications.
The Wages Council has approved that the wholesale and retail industry will receive a 20% increase and the new wage rate will be increased by 30 to 40 cents.
People working in the industry include, Cashiers, clerks, salesman, sewing machinist, storeman, unskilled workers, watchman and other workers.
