The interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the proposed Independent Tribunal under the proposed Media Promulgation will be an avenue where people will be able to appeal the Fiji Media Council's decision on complaints.
The proposed Media Promulgation will see all existing laws pertaining to the Media, its freedom and restrictions professional standards and code of ethics incorporated into it with the establishment of an independent tribunal.
Sayed-Khaiyum said it is still just a proposal and the interim government will consult all the media outlets and stakeholders about it. He said there is no need to criticize the move as the issue is just a proposal now.
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said they do not want to pursue the Qarase Government's approach of licensing media outlets.
Meanwhile the Chairman of the Fiji Media Council Daryl Tarte said he is shocked to know about this Tribunal. Tarte said the interim Attorney General told them a totally different thing in their meeting on Wednesday compared to what came out yesterday.
The interim Cabinet approved the formation of the proposed promulgation in its meeting yesterday. The Media Council will have an emergency meeting later today.
