Proposals have been put to the interim Sugar Minister to seek approval for a marginal increase in the local retail price of sugar.
Sugar Cane Growers Council Chief Executive Officer Surendra Sharma told Fijivillage that they made submissions and appealed to the Interim Sugar Minister who has agreed to seek PIB approval for the increase which would rake in $3.5 million for cane farmers.
Sharma stressed that sugar is currently sold at a loss in the local market.
Sharma said it will not be a substantial increase and consumers would be able to absorb the impact.
Interim Sugar Minister Joketani Cokanasiga is yet to comment.
The Prices and Incomes Board confirms that they are yet to receive any submissions on the proposed increase in the mark up price of sugar.
