The Draft Peoples Charter is atleast trying to tackle the much debated poverty situation in the country head on by bringing the reality of the situation to the forefront for the nation to see.
These are the words of ECREA Director Father Kevin Barr on the 8th pillar of the draft Charter which aims to reducing poverty to a negligible level by 2015. Father Barr said much work is needed, but it is achievable.
Father Barr, who is also the Chairman of the Ten Wages councils said the proposal to introduce a national minimum wage will take a few years to implement but in the short term, sectoral minimum wages will be the first step.
The draft Charter proposes to launch a concerted and coordinated National Programme to Reduce Poverty targeting to half the incidence level by 2015, introduce a national minimum wage and improve productivity and encourage and protect savings and investments of the poor amongst others.
