The Commissioner of Corrections Services, Lieutenant-Colonel Ifereimi Vasu has given an ultimatum to his senior prison officers to drastically cut down costs or he will do it himself.

The ultimatum was given in the quarterly Command Group meeting in Suva over the weekend.

Lt Col Vasu expressed disappointment that despite discussions earlier on the need to reduce costs, there has been no indication of reduction in expenditure.

Spokesperson, Josefa Matau said the Commissioner highlighted the need to reduce costs in fuel and electricity.

He said Lt Col Vasu told the officers that opportunity has been given to them to come up with a suggestion because if he has to do it from headquarters it might be harsh and unfair on some.

He also reminded the officers that the way government operated today is different from those a few years back.
