Several prisoners who have been remanded in police custody pending their appearance in the Magistrates courts around the country have had their remand period extended.

Court Officials have confirmed that under the Bails act, a suspect or accused person cannot be remanded in police custody for more than 14 days before appearing in court.

Since the courts were not in operation for the past 11 days since the abrogation of the 1997 constitution, the remanded period lapsed.

However, senior court Officers was then instructed to extend the remand period until the Magistrates courts resume from tomorrow.
