Police in Labasa are trying to determine how two remanded prisoners got hold of a box of matches and lit a mattress in their remand cell.

Police has confirmed the two were in the cell when they lit the mattress.

Quick action by the National Fire Authority prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.

Police are questioning the two and are trying to establish whether there was any alleged possible breach of the law by any of its officers.

Prisoners or people arrested and taken into custody are not supposed to keep matches with them.
