While the Korovou Prison facilities and infrastructure are currently being improved and worked on, there could be plans to make some of its landmarks a tourist attraction.
Those were the words of Fiji Prisons and Correction Services Commissioner Brigadier General Iowane Naivalurua who also said their cultural dancers, although made up of offenders, can also match what's on offer at other cultural centers for tourists.
Naivalurua said this is all part of the Yellow Ribbon Project to help the society accept the offenders.
Meanwhile, some of the tourist attractions Naivalurua talked about are the first ferro-concrete building in Fiji, the Suva Prison's Main Cell Block built in 1912-1913, now closed since 2005, the Korovou Death Chamber or Hangman's house, where offenders sentenced to death were taken and hung, the last execution was in 1964 and also furniture that was used for an offender to lie on when given corporal punishment, which is not practiced today.
