A swimming party turned ugly yesterday when a primary school student became the latest drowning victim after he was found floating in the Nawaka River in Nadi yesterday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Atunaisa Sokomuri said the seven year old student went swimming with his friends when one of his friends discovered his body floating in the river.

The incident happened after lunch yesterday. The drowning death toll now stands at 45 compared to 42 last year.
 
Meanwhile, a man is fighting for his life at Nadi Hospital after the car he was travelling in veered off and tumbled on the road last night in Nadi back road.

Director Traffic SSP Mahesh Mishra said the tyres burst following which the driver lost control of the vehicle which veered off the road and tumbled at around 10.30pm last night.

SSP Mishra has urged drivers to conduct proper checks on the vehicles before going on our roads.
