Presidents’ mandate must be fulfilled before elections- Bainimarama
Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji cannot have elections by March 2009 if everyone in the country do not cooperate in moving Fiji forward.
He said the changes that have to be made will have to be implemented first before elections are held.
When Village News questioned Commodore Bainimarama whether the date for elections is still confirmed for March 2009, he made it clear that they will not just have elections to please the international community.
The mandate set out by the President for the interim government include : to ensure that the constitution is upheld, to ensure that the Commander and his troops are granted immunity from prosecution for their actions from December 2006, to give effect to respective dismissals and appointments announced by the Commander in December, to ensure that the country has steady income for sustained economic growth, restructure the NLTB to ensure that benefits flow down to the ordinary indigenous Fijians, reduce poverty levels, set up an Anti Corruption Unit, set up proper electoral systems before the next elections and set up a proper Code of Conduct and Practices.
