The 2013 Fijian Constitution comes into effect today and is now the supreme law of Fiji.
In assenting to the 2013 Fijian Constitution yesterday, President Ratu Epeli Nailatikalau called the moment a historic day for Fiji.
At exactly 3.36pm, Nailatikau signed the constitution in front of Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, Government Ministers and invited guests at Government House.
Ratu Nailatikau said the constitution is also a blueprint for the future direction of the country which establishes the principle that every Fijian is equal.
Ratu Nailatikau said Fiji will now proceed on the basis of this document to yet another milestone, the first genuinely democratic election in history within a little over twelve months time.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimara said the
2013 Fijian Constitution enshrines principles that are at the heart of all the great liberal democracies.
The Prime Minister also spoke to those condemning the constitution
The Prime Minister added that he will subject himself to the will of the Fijian people at the polls before the end of September 2014.
The 2013 Fijian Constitution will come into effect tomorrow.
