Poverty is one of the major root causes of domestic violence and the consequence is discrimination against women.
This was the sentiment of the Women's Minister Dr Jiko Luveni while opening the symposium on Elimination of Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence this morning at the Studio Six Hotel.
Dr Luveni highlighted that domestic violence not only affects the victims but also has wide implications on the community.
Meanwhile, Director of Community Policing Department SSP Unaisi Vuniwaqa said there is an increase in sexual offences.
The symposium is a partnership between the Social Welfare Ministry and the Fiji Police Force.
