Post Offices To Provide New Service
Commodore Bainimarama made the comments while officially launching Fiji's first ever printing of birth certificates at the Korovou Post Office yesterday.
He said its part of the interim government's rural development program to assist the ordinary people who currently have to travel for miles to get a birth, death or marriage certificate.
Wailotua villager from Tailevu Jokesani Rokoleba said he used to pay $10 to travel to Suva to get his children's birth certificate, and he thanked the interim government for the new initiative that brings government services closer to the people.
Currently people have to either travel to Suva, Lautoka or Labasa to get a birth, death or marriage certificate. Soon most of the post offices will be providing this service.
Bainimarama has also revealed that people will be able to register new births at the post offices in the very near future.
He said this step was taken by the interim government as the past governments have been neglecting the people living in the rural years.
