The poor management of waste disposal has resulted in some of the rivers in the Suva area being a thousand times polluted over the legal limit under the Environment Act.
Dr Edward Anderson Lecturer at the USP's School of Marine Studies made the revelation while addressing the participants of the National Environment Week Campaign Workshop currently being held at the Southern Cross hotel in Suva.
Dr Anderson said the high level of pollution in the rivers can lead to health problems and one of their main concerns is the Nabukalou Creek which is in the main Central Business District.
Dr Anderson added one of the main contributing factor is the poor and aging sewerage facilities that is causing the problem.
Dr Andrew has been conducting surveys on the pollution levels in rivers in Fiji since 1993.
