The Foundation for the needy Children in Fiji believes that poor maternal health most likely leads to less effective parenting styles and control over children.
National Coordinator Irshad Ali said these are some of the observations made by their volunteers around the country and although parental desire for better education was recorded, the volunteers observed behavioral problems among children.
Ali said these children often perform poorly at schools adding that these issues need to be addressed.
A review carried out by FENC Fiji volunteers show that in single parent families such as widows, and in case of elderly grandparent, volunteers observed poor maternal health and other chronic diseases and children reared in chronically poor families seemed to face more developmental delays with continuous absence from school.
