Police step up traffic checks
This has been confirmed by Traffic Director SSP Mahesh Mishra who urges drivers to please follow all road rules and take safety and defensive driving measures to prevent accidents.
Mishra said from January to now, there has been 5,098 speeding cases, 465 people not wearing seatbelts, 240 cases of careless driving, 274 drink driving and others, totaling 12,000 cases in road offenses.
Mishra added despite their calls for people to adhere to road rules, there were six cases of drunk driving last night and this is a clear sign that people are still compromising the safety of people on our roads.
Mishra addesd passengers also play a vital role in reminding drivers that the safety of their passengers is paramount either in a private vehicle or in public transport.
Meanwhile, the Traffic Director also confirmed they are in the process of transferring the names of repeat serious road offenders to the Land Transport Authority to take further action, in an attempt to decrease the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads.
