More police presence is expected on our streets over the weekends from now onwards in an attempt to clamp down on criminal activities.
Assistant Police Spokesperson Sergeant Atunaisa Sokomuri said many police officers who work in offices during the week will also assist in patrols.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry is alarmed with the recent crime figures released by the Fiji Police on the number of offences committed by those in the school age group.
Minister Filipe Bole said the 2008 statistics show that out of the five categories of crimes committed, offences against property is the highest with 105 cases reported involving young people between the ages of 10 to 16 year old males.
Bole said the next category is offences committed against public morality with 19 cases involving the same age group with 6 reported cases of rape.
He said the real concern is the unreported cases.
