The traffic department together with officers from the Western Region Headquarters and Lautoka Police Station began an operation aimed at bringing to a stop the road fatalities in the western division.

Director Traffic Mahesh Mishra said the operation will see officers being deployed to the roadside scrutinizing all entries, exits to the City and stretches outside the City area.

Road blocks to help monitor movement will be erected.

Recent statistics show that the road death toll now stands at 37 compared to 28 during the same period last year.

Of the 37 fatalities, 21 were from the Western Region alone.

The figures also show that about fifty percent of fatalities occur over weekends.
