The Fiji Police Force lacks the skills, equipment and the laws to tackle international crime.

Interim Defense Minister Ratu Epeli Ganilau, in justifying the need to give police minimum training on customs, immigration and quarantine laws, said that with Fiji's geographical location, it is impossible to monitor the international ports of entry.

Speaking at the launching of a three day workshop where police heads from outer islands like Rotuma, Kadavu and even Savusavu were present, Ratu Epeli revealed that the newly setup Border Police will now have the power to enter any fishing boat or yacht.

Ganilau added that they will also be looking at introducing new legislations that would give the Police Border Control more powers.
