A Police officer has been posted to monitor drivers who are failing to follow the traffic signals at the Vatuwaqa Bailey bridge following concerns that it will cause a serious accident.

Some drivers are continuing to run red lights at the bridge and this is creating a chaotic situation for other drivers.

After 2pm yesterday, there was a near head-on collision between two vehicles because one of the drivers did not follow the traffic signals.

However, Fijivillage did not see any police officer monitoring the situation at the bridge around 4.30 this afternoon.

Police Chief of Operations ACP Rusiate Tudravu says an officer has been posted to monitor drivers who continue to run the red lights, therefore, depriving the opposite side enough time to drive through resulting in a long queue of vehicles.

He says the roadworks may cause some inconvenience for now and they ask drivers to think of others and be patient as the end result of the upgrading work will be beneficial to all Fijians.

The Fiji Roads Authority is also concerned that some motorists had removed the barricades to access the new bridge, especially during peak hour traffic.

Offenders have been photographed and they are working closely with Police.
