Police have charged two youths in relation to a rape in Nausori last Sunday, while two others have been questioned and released.
The Divisional Crime Officer Eastern, ASP Ramesh Chand told Legend FM news that one man has been charged with two counts of rape, while the other has been charged with assault.
He says their other two accomplices have been released due to lack of evidence, however they are still under investigation and police intend to charge them later.
The two will be appearing in Nausori court tomorrow. They are alleged to have gang raped a 23 year old woman who was on her way home after returning from a nightclub, when the four came in a car, grabbed the woman and took her to a vacant house in Nausori and allegedly gang-raped her. They are alleged to have kept the victim with them until mid-day Monday.
The matter was reported to police Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, with the increased number of rape cases surfacing over the last week, the Fiji Women's Crises Center said men nowadays do not respect women and this is why there has been an increase in rape cases.
Center Co-ordinator, Shamima Ali said apart from other contributing factors, gender inequality is one of the key reasons of an increase in these kinds of crime.
