Police have today confirmed that they have the right to stop a media organization from publishing a story if it would cause public disorder.
Spokesperson Ema Mua said officers from the CID Headquarters searched the Fiji Times newsroom for a petition written and signed by some civil servants against their Permanent Secretary last Friday.
Mua said officers went to the media outlet to get the petition following a complaint by the PSC Chairman Doctor Mohammed Yunus.
She said police have the right to prevent any disorder.
Under section 30 of the 1997 Constitution, every person has the right to freedom of speech and expression including freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas and freedom of the press and media.
Sub-section 2(A) said a law may limit or may authorize the limitation of, the right to freedom of expression in the interests of national security, public safety and public order.
