The Fiji Police Force now has powers under the new Mental Health Decree to arrest a mentally disturbed person if they pose a threat to their own safety or the public.
Under the Decree, a police officer may request the person to accompany him to the premises of a medical practitioner for examination.
If the person refuses to co-operate with Police, then the Officer has the right to arrest the person without a warrant and take the person for examination.
Police Spokesperson Fred Elbourne said while Police have such powers now, they are pleading to relatives not to ignore their duties.
Elbourne added that the general public also has a role to play and should call the nearest Police Station if they come across any mentally disturbed person.
