Police Urge Caution
As part of its festive season operation, Traffic Police officers in the Western Division last night arrested five people who were either drunk and were driving, acted in a disorderly manner or contravened the liqour license.
Divisional Traffic Officer ASP Richard Raju told Fijivillage that these five people were in police custody from last night and were released on bail this morning.
Police intercepted more than 2000 vehicles and booked 16 drivers for road related offences.
Meanwhile, the National Road Safety Council is urging drivers to take extra care because a lot of people will be using the roads this weekend.
Council Director Akapusi Tuifagalele said while the NRSC has played their part in awareness campaigns highlighting the dangers of speeding and drunk driving, the onus is with individual drivers.
While a lot of caution needs to be taken on our roads to prevent accidents, care needs to be taken while on picnics and at the home.
Police urge parents and youngsters to take care while out on a picnics, ensure that all family members are accounted for and there is no dangerous playing that could prove fatal.
The Fire Authority has also urged people to take care and practice fire safety measures.
