Police Officer Acquitted
Mohammed Ishrat Khan was accused of stealing $6,265 which was deposited by him at the Sigatoka Police Station as exhibition.
The court heard that in November 2004, Khan went to attend a robbery case in Malaqereqere as this money was seized from two suspects involved in a robbery at Tappoos.
However, the state lawyer told the court that the correct procedure was not followed in submitting the money to the right people at the station and the brief case containing the money was later found lying in a corner in the station with its seal broken.
However, Magistrate Kinivilliame Keteca after considering both the parties submission acquitted Khan on the grounds that there is no case to answer as the investigating officer in the case and the former Sigatoka Police Station officer did not appear in court to testify and that six other police officers had access to the exhibit room from 2004 to 2006 when the money was supposed to be exhibited in court.
