Police, LTA to impound all vehicles illegally operating as taxis
The Director Traffic Mahesh Mishra said their main objective during this month long operation is to see that drivers fully comply with the road rules and at the same time they will conduct awareness amongst the drivers.
Mishra said the decision to conduct this operation comes after a meeting with him and the LTA Chief Executive Officer.
He said it is against the LTA Act to provide public service using a private vehicle.
He said he has also asked the Fiji Taxi Union and the Taxi operators in the country to see that service is provided to the people 24 hours daily.
The CEO of LTA, Etuate Koroi said people resort to illegal services when there is no taxi to provide service.
He said taxi operators will have to operate from their base and abide by the permit condition.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Fiji Taxi Union, Rishi Ram said that many illegal operators are taking away the lion share of taxi business.
He said the enforcement officers will have no alternative but to cancel the permits if taxi operators do not abide by the taxi permit conditions.
