Labasa Police are questioning a man whose 38-year-old wife was allegedly stabbed to death in Soasoa over the weekend.

According to police, 38-year-old Meena Wati was reported missing by her husband on Friday night and her body was found about 200 metres from her home with multiple stab wounds.

Police media liaison officer Atunaisa Sokomuri has confirmed a post mortem was conducted yesterday and the cause of death is excessive blood loss and stab wounds on the intestine.

Wati's son found her body in the bushes.

A team of 25 detectives are working on the case and are following on some leads.

Meanwhile, police have arrested and charged a 28-year-old mechanic for allegedly raping an 18-year-old student in Toorak early Saturday morning.

He has been charged with one count of rape and will appear in the Suva Magistrates Court later today.

It is alleged that the mechanic requested the victim to stop a taxi for him at a night-club, and then dragged the victim inside with him.

He took her to an isolated area in Toorak and allegedly raped the girl three times.

The girl's cries for help were heard by a police officer on patrol who came to her assistance and the suspect was arrested at the scene.
